“The social impact of the government order is concealed. The wiping out of sources of livelihood of fisherfolk and urban poor families relying on fishing is certain to generate poverty and misery to women and children. Its immediate impact is hunger which is the main cause of malnutrition, diseases, and even death. In the long run, it pushes displacement due to the loss of livelihood. This is inhumane under the pandemic, where people are supposed to shelter in place, with sustainable sources of food and household income. This is an attack on social and economic rights, the foundation of women’s gender rights,” the group said in a press statement.

“We denounce the Philippine government for ordering such inhumane act, especially under this pandemic. It is devoid of respecting fishing rights, and even humanity. It intends to destroy sources of food and livelihood. The Duterte government has only exposed itself to the world that it is cruel and obtuse of basic socio-economic and cultural rights, and fundamental needs of a human being. We seriously call for the revocation of the said order and for the government to respect the right to work, food, shelter, and adequate standard of living of the small fisherfolk sector in the Cavite province,” said P. Chennai, APVVU Secretary of National Coordination, Chairperson of APC and Executive Committee Member of PCFS.

“The Philippine government is obviously callous and disrespectful of fishing rights and paradoxical of common sense that food production under the pandemic is of utmost importance. As early as June 2020, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned of a global food crisis due to the pandemic and called for appropriate actions to prevent it. But Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte seemed senseless as it is ordering the exact opposite,” Sylvia Mallari, CSM Coordinating Committee representing the Southeast Asia Sub-Region, said in a press statement.
Tree planting as resistance in Palestine
In 2001, a group concerned with the Palestinian struggle for justice formed to launch the Million Tree Campaign (MTC) in response to these pressures. In the past 20 years, the campaign has planted two and a half million trees, bolstering Palestinian foodways and preserving Palestinian land rights.1 The group that started the MTC later became the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature, which now works to achieve food sovereignty across the region, with an emphasis on areas experiencing war and occupation.
Int’l groups decry the destruction of mussel farms in Cavite, Philippines
For its part, PCFS said that this is a classic case of destruction of food systems brought about by the Philippine government’s promotion of neoliberal agenda, on top of a chronic social and political system dominated by the ruling class trampling on the socio-economic rights of marginalized sectors.

#SiegeTheSummit: Thousands echo calls of rural peoples to end neoliberal food systems
In #SiegeTheSummit counter-mobilizations from July 2 to 29, the voices and demands of marginalized rural peoples from the Global South—landless farmers, agricultural workers, indigenous peoples, fisherfolk, rural women, youth, rural people living in occupied areas, and sanctioned peoples—were highlighted. More than 100 organizations at the local, national, regional and global levels organized or participated in various consultations, workshops, webinars and other online fora, and street mobilizations.
